About University church of Christ

Our Mission Statement

The University Church: God's family for families and students.

University Church LogoThis mission statement captures our responsibility to minister to Christians and non-Christians. It puts the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) at the heart of what we do, affirming the unique story behind this body of believers. The all important vertical dimension of faith is stressed in the phrase - God's family. We exist to fulfill his purposes - reaching the many who have no Savior and caring for His precious body of believers.

Another way to visualize our mission is with our logo. The extended hand represents our sincere wish to reach out to others. This outreach is to the world as seen with the globe. All of this is done with Jesus' cross as the background - the governing force in our Christian lives.

Our Unique Story

On December 4, 1955, 81 individuals gathered for the first meeting of the College Town church of Christ. Members from the Jackson Street congregation had observed the growth of the college and envisioned a church that would reach to its students and faculty. The sole purpose of establishing the congregation was to share the Good News with others.

The body has steadily grown through the years, maintaining a strong emphasis on serving the college community. In 1976, the church constructed the present-day Student Center.

University is a diverse church. A part of the family's unique story is its open door to people of all races and ethnic backgrounds. This speaks of a church that sees God as Father of all nations.

Our Beliefs

Our beliefs do not stem from a creed. we believe that we should speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent. We have found that this actually frees us. We have:

A desire to be a church "of Christ."
The focus is not an institution, but a relationship with Christ. As His disciples, we want to follow in the steps of our Master (John 13:12f).
A desire to be a caring family.
Because God is our Father, we have another relationship with his children - a family with brothers and sisters. We aim for Jesus' "new commandment - love one another as I have loved you," (John 13:34-35). As Jesus fed the hungry and cared for the weak, so we desire to be compassionate.
A desire to be non-denominational.
The New Testament church had those who sought to divide it. Paul reacted in this way: "Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?" (1 Cor. 1:13). We, therefore, refrain from religious titles not found in the New Testament. We call on all believers to be "Christians only." We seek unity in essentials, liberty in opinions, and in all things love.

Our Wish for You

This family knows all too well its own brokenness and the need for saving grace. We actively seek to serve those searching for God. Our compassion through the ULM campus ministry, a regular food pantry for those in need, mission work in foreign nations, a Children's Bible Hour, activities for teens, and Christian counseling through the Compass Center. Five men serve as the church's shepherds/elders. they counsel, visit, and care for the souls in this Christian community.

Our wish is to serve you with that which Christ has generously given us - His Love.
